About Knock Knock Piano Studio

Hello!  I’m Katherine Knock and I’d like to welcome you to ‘Knock Knock Piano Studio’.

My studio is at my home in the Suffolk town of Kesgrave where I live with my husband and two adult daughters. Originally a primary school teacher, I feel very lucky that I can now combine my passion for teaching and for playing my favourite instrument – the piano - at my home!  It’s a great job and I love it!

Exploring Music Making

Making music is central to all my lessons. I encourage and support all my students to investigate and explore music making through movement, singing, playing, composing and improvising, both at the piano and away from it. This is a less traditional and more holistic approach to learning which ensures all my students develop as well rounded musicians. So not only are they able to read and play written music but they are also equally able to just 'make it up' at the piano!

Knock Knock Piano Studio

Piano lessons at Knock Knock Piano Studio are informal fun and centred around my students musical interests and abilities. I love all sorts of music and encourage my students to appreciate all sorts of music too. Thus the repertoire they learn is a mix of everything! From classical to pop, contemporary to boogie woogie. Nothing is off limits! I teach both school aged and adult students and offer lessons from absolute beginners to more advanced levels.

Student Centred Lessons

My school aged students enjoy singing with ‘Gloria’ and tapping the rhythm ‘codes’ to get into the studio!

A Modern Piano Curriculum

I teach a piano specific curriculum which guides and informs all my teaching from beginners right through to more advanced levels. My students learn musical concepts and I plan their lessons carefully to ensure they have  a modern and progressive learning experience which is tailored made for each of them.

My students have plenty of opportunities to share their playing with each other and take part in regular informal recitals throughout the year. Adults have a termly ‘Coffee Cake Concert’ and school age students get to show off their music learning to family and friends through a half termly ‘Music Showcase’.

Making Music Together

The Curious Piano Teachers

I am an active member of ‘The Curious Piano Teachers’ community as I love to learn as much as I teach!  I regularly attend workshops, and take part in courses in order to connect with fellow professionals and to keep my teaching and learning up to date.  I am also a member of The Independent Society of Musicians (ISM), a professional body for musicians, and have a diploma in piano performance and singing.  As part of my ongoing commitment to professional development and personal music making, I am currently undertaking Kodaly training with the BKA and NYCOS.

Testimonials

Katherine is a friendly, enthusiastic, patient and well qualified piano teacher and, because her teaching is student led, can adapt to the starting point of the student. Not only can she teach young children from the age of 6 or 7, she can also teach adults who are either wanting to refresh skills learnt as a child or are starting from scratch. She will find out what your reasons for playing are, which could be for personal enjoyment only or to take Music School Grade exams, and will tailor her lessons accordingly. She is always thoroughly prepared and has a range of fun activities to support her teaching programme. I enjoy our time together and look forward to the next session.

My grandson has been having piano lessons with Katherine since 2021 which he thoroughly enjoys. Katherine is very friendly and student focused and flexible. She sets various activities for the student to practise at home. She is very patient and also involves me as I always take my grandson for his lessons. She has lots of activities and fun music-based objects to help with his learning too. My grandson always says the time goes so fast when he is there and he always looks forward to his next lesson.

Sharon Poppy

Myself and my husband have separately been having teaching from Katherine at Knock Knock Piano Studios for 3 years and really enjoy our time in lessons. Katherine is very knowledgeable and has opened up the whole new world of piano to us! She explains things very clearly and answers any sometimes random questions we may have! Katherine has identified that each of us learns in different ways and has adapted the lessons to suit our needs and bring out our strengths. Katherine is always encouraging and enthusiastic, delighting in our successes and giving us guidance and tips to build on where needed. Learning to play the piano is something I always wanted to do, so when gifted an old piano figured it was a sign that I could finally learn! And with Katherine's expert teaching we have learnt lots over the last three years and look forward to learning and progressing further in the years to come!
